Pastor Larry and his wife Yolanda were both born and raised in South Central Los Angeles. Larry graduated from Washington High school in 1969. Yolanda graduated from Locke High School in 1972. After his discharge from the US Army in 1973, Larry attended California State University, Dominguez Hills and met his future wife Yolanda. Larry received his B.S. in Information Technology Business Applications. Yolanda received her B.S. in Sociology and later her Master’s Degree in Public Administration.
Larry believes that 1975 was the most significant turning point in his life. In that year he met his wife Yolanda in May and gave his life to Jesus Christ in June. By December, he and Yolanda were married and have continued on this love journey for 40 years. The Doves have 2 adult children; Marcus (30) is a professional basketball player currently playing in France. Brittney,(28) a teacher recently married, is currently living in Japan with her husband who is completing a 3 year naval enlistment. The Doves have 2 grandchildren, Maze and Dylan.
Larry (1979) and Yolanda (1983) were ordained in an Independent Pentecostal church called Holy Temple Mission Faith Center located in South Los Angeles and later moved to Watts. Larry served as an Associate Pastor from 1979 through 1995. Being led to become better equipped for ministry, in October 1987 Larry enrolled in Fuller Theological Seminary and during his tenure at Fuller, Larry developed a passion for ethnic and cultural diversity from a Kingdom perspective. Larry received his M.A. Degree in Theology in 1994 from Fuller.
In August 1996, Larry was led to start attending Emmanuel Reformed Church (ERC) in Paramount. Though ERC was predominately Anglo at that time, the church leadership decided to take intentional steps to reach out to their increasingly racially diverse community. Larry was instrumental in helping to start Emmanuel’s first multi-cultural worship service in February 1997 named “The Noon Service”. This service grew in racially diverse numbers, blossomed in unity in its diverseness, and eventually become the “gateway” which broaden the overall ethnic and cultural acceptance throughout the church and its mission at large. Also during this time at ERC, Larry led racial reconciliation classes, launched ethnic celebration worship services, helped launch weekly Spanish worship service, and provided racial and cultural sensitivity guidance when needed. Larry eventually became Campus Outreach Pastor at ERC and helped to establish and maintain several outreach ministries in the Paramount / Compton communities.
Yolanda has devoted most of her working career (State of California) towards resourcing underprivileged adults with employable skills that provides them the opportunity to enter into the work force. Yolanda receives great joy seeing clients with disabilities formerly marginalized and unemployable become successfully employed, independent and off welfare and become self-sufficient.
In July 2012, Larry accepted the call to become the senior pastor of Park Hills Community Church with the blessing and support of Yolanda. His passion focuses on positioning Park Hills to become more of a viable Kingdom of God influence in the community by living out the gospel of grace, loving people from all walks of life, and in serving this community in both small and large capacities. Yolanda’s passion is encouraging young women to find and live into their God given purpose unashamedly. She is a gifted speaker in her own right and currently serves as President of PHCC Women’s Ministries and works with Youth ministries.
Larry’s positive attitude as it relates to life’s challenges at any level is “The Best is Yet to Come”!
